VIGIL ON SEPTEMBER 6TH TO COMMEMORATE ONE YEAR
SINCE KITIGAN ZIBI’S MAISY ODJICK AND SHANNON
ALEXANDER DISAPPEARED

A vigil will take place on Sunday September 6th, 2009 in Kitigan Zibi, QC at 7:00pm to acknowledge one year has
passed since Maisy Odjick and Shannon Alexander went missing. The vigil will begin with a walk starting at Home
Hardware located at 79 Kichi Mikan in Kitigan Zibi.  The walk will then proceed through Principale S street in the
town of Maniwaki and will end at Nagishkodadiwin Park near the Chateau Logue Hotel.  Once the walk is complete,
everyone will gather at Nagishkodadiwin Park for the vigil ceremony.

Elder Pauline Decontie will begin the ceremony with an opening prayer. Biola Smith will then lead a song performed
by the Kitigan Zibi’s Women’s Drum Group. Eagle River Drum Group will also be drumming. The ceremony will
continue with invited speakers that will address the disappearance of Maisy Odjick and Shannon Alexander.

Speakers include Kitigan Zibi Chief Gilbert Whiteduck, Pierre Hughes-Boisvenu, Association des Families de
Personnes, Assassinees ou Disparues, Hull-Aylmer MP Monsieur Marcel Proulx, Craig Benjamin of Amnesty
International, Carole Brazeau of Quebec Native Women Inc., Jennifer Lord of the Native Women's Association of
Canada, and Miss Algonquin Nation’s Katrina Whiteduck. The speakers will conclude with members from both the
Odjick and Alexander families.  

Candles will then be lit followed by a moment of silence to commemorate the missing girls. A closing prayer and songs
will conclude the ceremony.

Background
The Algonquin Anishinabe girls went missing together one year ago without a trace.  Maisy Odjick, now 17, is six-feet
tall, 125 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes. Maisy has two piercings on her bottom lip and one in her nose.
Shannon Alexander, now 18, is five feet nine inches, 145 pounds and also has brown hair and brown eyes.

$12,000 has been raised by the family as a reward for any information leading to the whereabouts of Maisy Odjick
and Shannon Alexander.
